The Scholarship foundation
D S Senanayake College is a Sri Lankan government school where children of a cross section of the community attend the school. Amongst the students there are bright children who come from poor homes and face economic hardships.
The Scholarship foundation of D. S. Senanayake College OBA was inaugurated in 1997 and is managed by the 82’ batch. This Foundation has been instrumental in assisting students of D. S. Senanayake College who have shown excellence in their studies but face economic hardship to continue their studies at College. The foundation was the brain child of our founder principal Mr. R. I. T. Alles. In the 1970’s and 1980’s, the Parent Teacher association (PTA) assisted students from poor families by providing them with mid day meals.
With this concept in mind the 82’ batch took it upon themselves to launch the DSS OBA Scholarship Foundation. We started with awarding 10 Scholarships to deserving students and now we award 50 students with Scholarships. The names of deserving students are obtained from class teachers and sectional heads of the School. At present only students from grade 6 to G. C. E. (A/L) are considered. The members of the Scholarship Foundation committee, visits the home of each of the students who have been nominated and assess their economic status. A strict selection criteria is followed and only if the members are satisfied of the genuineness of the nominated student, they recommend the awarding of the Scholarship. The progress of the each Scholarship recipient is monitored every year to ensure that they keep excelling in their studies with the assistance we give them. Each selected students are given School uniforms, shoes, socks and stationary every year. In addition canteen meal coupons for mid day meals are given to each student for the whole year. The cost incurred currently to sustain each student is approximately Rs. 17000/= per year.
Plan: Funds for the Scholarship Foundation are generated through fund raising projects such as musical shows, dramas etc. and through well wishers who sponsor Scholarships every year.
Appeal:We believe in our school Motto “Country Before Self” and we are confident that the students to whom we grant scholarships will become worthy citizens of our country. We appeal to the well wishers, public & private sector organizations to support for this worthy cause which will enable bright and intelligent children who face economic hardships to continue their studies and become useful and worthy citizens of our country.
